CODEX ONBOARD RECORDER – RECORDING ARRIRAW 2160p Rev10.01.2012 PAGE 1
Codex Onboard: Recording ARRIRAW 2160p from the ARRI Alexa
Studio in single camera mode.
1. Getting Started
The “Codex Onboard Recorder Getting Started Guide” concisely covers most functions of the Codex Onboard
recorder, including how to use the remote handset to interact with the menu system. The “…Getting Started…”
document can be downloaded from the Support section of the Codex website (http://www.codexdigital.com).

2. Shooting ARRIRAW 2160p (2D camera)
This document describes how to configure the Codex Onboard recorder to record ARRIRAW 2160p images
from an ARRI Alexa Studio camera in single camera (non-S3D) configuration.
We assume the following hardware/software versions:
ARRI Alexa Studio camera, firmware 5.0 final release
Codex Onboard recorder, software 2011-r2-4001
Notes:
The Alexa firmware version can be viewed using the menu system on the side panel of the camera; press the
“INFO” button, then the multipurpose button labelled “SYSTEM”.
To view the software version on a Codex Onboard recorder, use the Control Panel UI to navigate to the
“SETUP->System” page. The version number will be shown at the top of the screen. If the Codex needs to be
updated, installation packages and instructions can be found at http://www.codexdigital.com/software
A licence for Multi-Chan is required to record ARRIRAW above 30fps. This can be checked on the Setup-
>Licence menu.
The highest frame rate that can be recorded at 2160p is 48fps (some Codex Datapack models are limited to
30fps at 2160p)
3. Menu settings on the Alexa camera
The Alexa’s [MENU->RECORDING->REC OUT] page should be configured as follows:
Frame rate: <your choice>
HD-SDI format: ARRIRAW 3G SL [for up to 30fps] or ARRIRAW 3G DL (for above 30fps)
Scan format: p
Output range: Raw
REC OUT fps sets sensor fps:
Enabled [when shooting standard HD rates 23.98, 24.00, 25.00, 29.97, 30.00, 48.00]
Disabled [when shooting off-speeds / variframe]
SDI Remote: On
Variflag: On
The HD-SDI format should be set first, and most other listed settings will be automatically filled in.
If you intend to send TC to the Codex recorder via HD-SDI, the Alexa’s [TIMECODE->OPTIONS] menu should
be configured as follows:
Source: Int TC or Ext LTC (depending on user requirements)
Mode: Free Run
4. Menu parameters for Codex Onboard recorder 2011.r2.4001
The majority of menu settings on the Codex Onboard recorder can be set at the start of a shoot and left as-is
for the duration of the project. We will cover these menu items first, then move on to the settings that a
camera crew might interact with on a day-to-day basis.
4.1 A brief reminder of how to enter the SETUP menu using the remote handset
Press the [ARROW] button. The root menu “Back | Play | Setup | Storage” will be displayed at the bottom of
the screen.
Press the [Setup] button. The list of all setup pages will be displayed. You can scroll through the page titles
using the rotary dial. Press the centre of the rotary dial to select a particular setup page.
4.2 Before a shoot: Project-wide settings
Menu: SETUP->PROJECT (“PROJECT SETUP”)
The “PROJECT SETUP“ menu allows you to set global metadata fields that are applied to recorded clips.
When a recording is made, the current values of these fields are associated with the new clip. The default field
